ASSISTANCE LEAGUE® OF ALBUQUERQUE AND ROADRUNNER FOOD BANK JOIN FORCES
Albuquerque, NM - April 4, 2008 – Two Albuquerque non-profits join together to alleviate hunger in Albuquerque. Assistance League of Albuquerque, in its 45th year in the city, is stepping forward this spring to support the Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico. In a one-time donation, Assistance League members have voted to allocate $11,000 for the Food Bank to use to purchase needed food. This donation is part of Assistance League’s community outreach and goal of “Volunteers enriching lives for a better community.” Assistance League of Albuquerque’s president, Judy Hawbaker recently said, “Assistance League is pleased to support Roadrunner Food Bank, the leader in hunger relief for New Mexico.” “This support from the Assistance League comes at a critical time,“ said Melody Wattenbarger, executive director of Roadrunner Food Bank. “Recent increases in fuel and food prices really put a strain on working families and seniors living on fixed incomes. Also, with summer approaching, children won’t have access to free school lunches. Roadrunner will use this allocation to distribute nutritious food to hungry New Mexicans.” In addition to nine philanthropic programs that support the Albuquerque community, Assistance League operates the Bargain Box Thrift Shop at 5211 Lomas NE, which is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Assistance League of Albuquerque is a chapter of National Assistance League® and has approximately 300 members. For more information about Assistance League, including how to become a member, please call 265-0619 or go to the website www.albuquerque.assistanceleague.org.
