January 2006

Dear Friends

2005 was a difficult year for many Americans and others around the world.  As we watched our television sets and read our newspapers, we saw the agony of people suffering through natural disasters.  We saw parents desperately trying to find food to feed their children.  We saw crowded shelters, bodies in the streets, and one of our nation's great cities destroyed.

We saw other things as well.  We saw how generous we are as a people.  We saw thousands of people get involved and lend a helping hand.  In 2005, Americans gave generously.  America’s Second Harvest, the Nation's Food Bank Network, gave over 2,000 truckloads of food (with a value of $84 million) to those affected by the hurricanes.  Over 160,000 pounds of food and $225,000 was sent to hurricane victims from Roadrunner Food Bank as a result of the generous gifts of time, food, and money given by New Mexicans.

We also saw, that amidst all of the natural disasters, from the Tsunamis to the Hurricanes, you did not forget.  You did not let your fellow New Mexicans down.  Your generosity has helped to make sure that we didn't ignore the thousands of New Mexicans who face hunger every day.  Thank you.

In 2006, our hope is that everyone will give just as generously to help the people of our state who could not feed themselves or their children without the Food Bank.  There are more than 50,000 hungry people every week that need our help.  With the rising cost of fuel, this winter is going to be especially difficult for many.

Happy New Year and thank you for your continued support of our mission to end hunger in New Mexico.

Roadrunner's "Full Plate Society" Announced

Every November, Roadrunner Food Bank holds its annual “A Place at the Table” fundraising breakfast, an opportunity for people to learn more about the food bank and its efforts to fight hunger.  The goal of “A Place at the Table” is to raise much-needed operating funds to support the work of the food bank over several years.

“During this season of giving we invite people to come to a free breakfast and learn more about how they can be involved in feeding our hungry neighbors,” said Kathy Komoll, food bank board president.  “Every single New Mexican can do something to help fight hunger.”

The program, which begins at 7:30 a.m. and which lasts one hour, includes special talks, testimonials and a video.  Most of the people who attend the breakfast will be invited guests of food bank board members, volunteers, and donors, but anyone with an interest in the work of the food bank is welcome.

As a result of the breakfasts in 2003, 2004 and 2005, the food bank now has 63 members of its Full Plate Society.  People become members of the Full Plate Society by pledging a minimum of $1,000 per year for 5 years.

Individuals, civic groups, and businesses don't have to wait for November to join the Full Plate Society.  You can join anytime.  Giving levels start at $1,000 per year for five years and up.  Pledges can be paid yearly or monthly (starting at only $84/month!) by check, credit card, or through United Way.
