HUNGER STORIES
To truly understand hunger in New Mexico, it’s best to learn about hunger directly from the stories of those who are facing hunger. It isn’t always obvious who is going without food or facing food insecurity. It might be your friend, your grandparents, or a co-worker who is struggling to put food on the table.
The latest Map the Meal Gap report shows that 1 in 4 children and 1 in 6 of our neighbors in New Mexico are at risk of hunger. Weekly, Roadrunner® Food Bank is able to help tens of thousands of people experience hunger through our network of partner agencies and direct service programs. These numbers include children, families, seniors, veterans, the disabled, and others who have difficulty getting enough to eat.
The good news is that we can help end hunger in New Mexico. Every dollar donated to Roadrunner Food Bank allows us to distribute up to five meals to hungry New Mexicans around the state. Our programs and services are giving hungry New Mexicans access not just to food, but nutritious food, including fresh produce.
Meet and hear from some of the people in our state impacted by hunger.
Meet a few of our fellow New Mexicans facing hunger, including grandparents raising grandchildren, those facing chronic health issues and hunger, the disabled, and those unable to find gainful employment. Each of our neighbors in need receive services from Roadrunner Food Bank programs and member partners in our community.
Quotes from our community members struggling with hunger
“When we can’t afford food, you help me to eat so I don’t go hungry,”
“I just want you to know that we are blessed with the food that comes to us here through Roadrunner Food Bank. All of us are on a fixed income. This is a BIG help. Not only is the food a God send, but being able to meet with other seniors helps us come together and support one another as best as we can. Thank you!”
“This food really helps us out a lot. After losing my job, it really makes a difference,”
“If I didn’t have this food today, I wouldn’t be able to eat. Thank you so much for what you do. The only way I eat is because of your work. Truly, thank you.”
“This food is such a tremendous help. I need it for my dad and me. I plan on attending each distribution. We can’t do without it right now.”
“Grandma, all this food is for us? Are you sure, this watermelon too? I haven’t had watermelon in a long time.”
“I have two teenage boys and one needs specialized medical care. It’s only available in Phoenix, but with a broken down car, I can’t afford to fix it and get the medical care he needs. It’s now summer and my boys don’t have access to meals they normally receive at school for free. I’m truly desperate and every month is tight as a single parent.”
“I have a chronic disease and had to stop working for awhile to manage my illness. With two children to feed there was nothing left to buy food. Now that we have been receiving food assistance at our children’s school, things are much better.”
